What inspired you to design your own Christmas PJs for kids?
I never imagined I would design and manufacture my own product when I started Acorn + Oak. It wasn’t something I had ever considered or planned for. But after a year in business, I thought a little project like designing kids’ Christmas PJs could be fun and a great learning experience. I wanted to understand the process of how clothing is made, from concept to final product. So, I decided to give it a try – and now I’m excited to do more!
Can you walk us through the creative process, from concept to final product?
Honestly, I had no idea where to even start – it was all so new to me. I have basic design skills, but I knew I needed help bringing the designs to life. I worked with a talented graphic designer who helped translate my vision into six initial designs, based on Pinterest searches for pattern ideas. Together, we narrowed it down to two designs, and I had them made into samples. Then came the hard part: choosing just one to manufacture! I still love the other design and plan to run it next year if all goes well. The entire process took about 9 months from start to finish.
What were some of the key design elements you focused on when creating these PJs?
I didn’t want the pattern to overwhelm the child. I prefer clear, minimalist designs, and I know many parents feel the same, especially with the busy, bright patterns often found in fast fashion for kids. I wanted the PJs to be gender-neutral, subtle, and sweet—something that would capture a child’s curiosity without being too loud. The design also had to work for both little babies and older kids, so it needed to be versatile and timeless.
How do you balance the festive theme with practical considerations like comfort and durability?
Christmas PJs are such a tradition for many families, but I wanted the design to be something that could be worn beyond the holiday season. While the PJs feature Christmas icons, they are subtle enough that little ones can wear them throughout the summer too. Scarlett has been wearing one of the first samples since May, and I love seeing her in it without feeling like a mid-year Grinch!
Were there any challenges you faced during the design or production stages?
Looking back, it was a fairly seamless process. The production was overseas in a different time zone, so there were late nights on the phone trying to tweak things – but that’s all part of running a business! It did take some patience, but overall, everything came together well.
What fabrics or materials did you choose for the PJs, and why?
I chose 100% organic cotton because comfort, texture, and fit were my top priorities. As a child, I struggled with fabrics on my skin, so I wanted to create something that would be buttery soft, organic, and high-quality for little ones. I also chose soft cotton labels because they’re soft and gentle on skin but can easily be cut out by parents if needed. After we chose the fabric and labels, I washed the samples repeatedly to make sure they wouldn't fade or fall apart. Scarlett wore one pair, and I tested two others through multiple washes to ensure they met my high standards for quality.
How do you involve your kids or other families in the design process, if at all?
Scarlett was my model and tester for both the samples and the final product, and she absolutely loved being a part of it! By the end of the design process, I think my family and friends may have gotten a little tired of me asking for their opinions! But as a solo business owner, it was really important to get feedback from others, especially fellow parents.
What feedback have you received from parents or kids who have worn your PJs?
The feedback has been amazing! Parents can’t believe how soft the PJs are and how well they’ve held up after washing. I’m so thrilled with the response and can’t wait to see more little ones in them this Christmas season!
